  1. Frequentist validity of posterior quantiles for a two-parameter exponential family: Biometrika, Vol. 83, No. 1. (1 March 1996), pp. 55-65.Berger & Bernardo's (1989) reference priors and Tibshirani (1989) priors are derived for distributions in Bar-Lev & Reiser's (1982) two-parameter exponential family when either the location or the scale parameter is of interest. The reference prior is shown to be a Tibshirani prior. Furthermore, conditions under which a Tibshirani prior is a higher-order matching prior are investigated. When both the parameters are of interest, it is also shown that the reference prior agrees with the prior matching the posterior and frequentist expansions based on the signed square root of log-likelihood ratio. The normal, inverse Gaussian, and gamma distributions are used to illustrate the results. 10.1093/biomet /83.1.55Dongch u Sun, Keying Ye

  2. A network access control approach based on the AAA architecture and authorization attributes: Journal of Network and Computer Applications, Vol. 30, No. 3. (August 2007), pp. 900-919.Networ k access control mechanisms constitute an increasingly needed service, when communications are becoming more and more ubiquitous thanks to some technologies such as wireless networks or Mobile IP. This paper presents a particular scenario where access rules are based not only on the identity of the different users but also on authorization data related to those users. In order to accomplish this general goal, it will be necessary to add to the traditional system-specifi c services for authentication and authorization, and also some entities able to manage the information related to identity, roles and permissions. Network access will be based on the 802.1X framework and the Authentication , Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) architecture, as they constitute the basis for most of the existing proposals for limiting the access to a restricted network. These proposals will be extended making use of an authorization infrastructure based on SAML statements, the RBAC model, and XACML as the main language for expressing authorization policies. The solution that we present in this paper is a consequence of an exhaustive and non-trivial analysis of the different mechanisms that could be used to provide this kind of service. As we will see, the correct integration of these different mechanisms leads to the definition of a scalable and versatile network access control system which conforms to the guidelines outlined by the AAA initiative.Gab riel Lopez, Oscar Canovas, Antonio Gomez, Jesus Jimenez, Rafael Marin

  4. Basic dosimetric verification in water of the anisotropic analytical algorithm for Varian, Elekta and Siemens linacs: Zeitschrift für Medizinische Physik, Vol. 18, No. 2. (10 June 2008), pp. 128-135.Since early 2007 a new version of the Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm (AAA) for photon dose calculations was released by Varian Medical Systems for clinical usage on Elekta linacs and also, with some restrictions, for Siemens linacs. Basic validation studies were performed and reported for three beams: 4,6 and 15 MV for an Elekta Synergy, 6 and 15 MV for a Siemens Primus and, as a reference, for 6 and 15 MV from a Varian Clinac 2100C/D. Generally AAA calculations reproduced well measured data and small deviations were observed for open and wedged fields. PDD curves showed in average differences between calculation and measurement smaller than 1% or 1.2 mm for Elekta beams, 1% or 1.8 mm for Siemens beams and 1% or 1 mm for Varian beams. Profiles in the flattened region matched measurements with deviations smaller than 1% for Elekta and Varian beams, 2% for Siemens. Percentage differences in Output Factors were observed as small as 1% in average.Luca Cozzi, Giorgia Nicolini, Eugenio Vanetti, Alessandro Clivio, Marco Glashörster, Hans Schiefer, Antonella Fogliata

  6. The Interpretation of Dreams: (07 March 2007)Whether we love or hate Sigmund Freud, we all have to admit that he revolutionized the way we think about ourselves. Much of this revolution can be traced to The Interpretation of Dreams, the turn-of-the-ce ntury tour de force that outlined his theory of unconscious forces in the context of dream analysis. Introducing the id, the superego, and their problem child, the ego, Freud advanced scientific understanding of the mind immeasurably by exposing motivations normally invisible to our consciousness. While there's no question that his own biases and neuroses influenced his observations, the details are less important than the paradigm shift as a whole. After Freud, our interior lives became richer and vastly more mysterious. These mysteries clearly bothered him--he went to great (often absurd) lengths to explain dream imagery in terms of childhood sexual trauma, a component of his theory jettisoned mid-century, though now popular among recovered-memo ry therapists. His dispassionate analyses of his own dreams are excellent studies for cognitive scientists wishing to learn how to sacrifice their vanities for the cause of learning. Freud said of the work contained in The Interpretation of Dreams, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." One would have to feel quite fortunate to shake the world even once. --Rob Lightner In this book Sigmund Freud has attempted to expound the methods and results of dream-interpre tation; and in so doing he does not think he overstepped the boundary of neuro-patholog ical science. For the dream proves on psychological investigation to be the first of a series of abnormal psychic formations, a series whose succeeding members-the hysterical phobias, the obsessions, the delusions- must, for practical reasons, claim the attention of the physician.
